HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH?

Did you know that one in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives? And while some may believe that breast cancer only affects women, the truth is an estimated 2,190 men will be diagnosed each year with breast cancer. But the good news is, when detected and treated early, most can survive this complex disease. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and, here at Kodiak Cakes, we want to join everyone else out there working to help raise awareness about the importance of education, early detection, and support when it comes to breast cancer.

FOOD CHOICES MATTER

Physical activity, body weight, and diet are just three contributing factors to the onset of breast cancer. And while no particular foods can prevent you from getting breast cancer, it is said that 30% to 40% of cancers link back to diet. Doing what you can to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains may help you get the nutrients you need to help lower your risk for breast cancer.

It is important to eat fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains because these food groups have high amounts of dietary fiber that supports your body’s digestive system and aids in eliminating waste. In the case of breast cancer, fiber can help your body regulate estrogen levels and prevent your gut from absorbing too much estrogen. Why does this matter? Too much estrogen may be a contributing factor to the development and spread of some types of breast cancer, but a high-fiber diet can help inhibit estrogen from interacting with cancer cells.

Fibrous foods like whole grains also contain antioxidants that actually help prevent many diseases by helping reduce unstable free radical counts in the body. Unstable free radicals are molecules that can put your body into oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can start to damage cells in your body and lead to diseases like breast cancer. Improving your diet by making even the smallest of choices, like swapping out refined or enriched grains for whole grains, can help you not only feel better and improve your overall health, but it can also help reduce your risk for breast cancer.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is a great resource to help educate you and your loved ones about breast cancer. Additionally, we’re offering 15% off all pink products purchased at kodiakcakes.com this weekend and will donate 10% of all earnings to support the NBCF in their efforts to provide “breast health education to those learning about their risks, early detection services to those in need, and a helping hand to those diagnosed with breast cancer and their loved ones as they navigate the complex cancer care system.” This means you can save 15% on Kodiak Cakes Strawberry Chocolate Chip Power Cakes Flapjack & Waffle MixStrawberry Chocolate Chip Flapjack Unleashed CupStrawberry Dark Chocolate Oatmeal Unleashed Cup, and Raspberry Fruit Syrup, and you can help us in our efforts to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, too!
