After School Snacks for your Kodiak Cubs

The school year has officially begun, and your kids are undoubtedly starting to have summer withdrawals as their schedules become busier heading into fall. School is draining, even for your most dedicated classroom aficionados and especially for you as parents. During summer, food is usually available at the drop of a hat. When your child cries, “I’m hungry,” it’s only a matter of reaching in the pantry, your bag, or the back of your stroller to get them a filling snack. But during the school year, your children’s snacks are much more scheduled, and their only chance to have an actual snack is after the final bell rings.

At Kodiak Cakes, we know that snacks crafted with complex carbohydrates, fiber, and protein keep us feeling fuller for longer, and energized so we can concentrate on the task at hand. So, we’ve come up with three great after school snack options to help keep your kids full of energy as they head into an afternoon full of activities.

PIZZA PINWHEELS

Pizza is a common favorite among kids…who’re we kidding? Pizza is a common favorite among everyone. It’s easy to eat, easy to make—and it tastes good! The reason we all love pizza so much is because pizza is typically high in glutamate, which stimulates our umami taste perception, enhances flavor, and makes us crave it more. However, pizza is also high in sodium and saturated fat, so it’s not generally a go-to after school snack. But don’t worry, we have a solution for all your pizza-loving kiddos.

With a little prep, these Pizza Pinwheels will have your kids asking for pizza every day, and you’re going to be okay with it. Loaded with 100% whole grains from our Kodiak Cakes Whole Wheat Oat & Honey Mix, these little pizzas have 9.5 grams of protein and only 160 calories. Rest assured, we’re not ruining your dinner plans. Getting creative with your toppings can also add an extra spike of nutrition! Some of our favorites include fresh veggies and pineapple. We also love chopped herbs like sage and basil, which are proven to improve brain function and fight off infection, both of which will help keep your kids in school. Just freeze the leftovers and warm them in the oven for a snack all week!

Banana Chocolate Chip Power Muffins

We all know it can be tough getting your kids to eat their fruits and vegetables, but trust us when we say your kids will go bananas for these Banana Chocolate Chip Power Muffins. This classic pairing of chocolate and bananas is a perfect after school snack for your picky-eaters. Our Kodiak Cakes Buttermilk Power Cakes makes them a great source of protein to satisfy your students’ afternoon cravings and keep them full until dinnertime.

Bananas are especially important for your children’s diet. Not only do they offer a number of vitamins and minerals, but bananas also are a great source of carbohydrates to keep your kids’ motors running throughout all their afternoon activities. Even further, bananas are rich in potassium, which helps regulate blood flow in the brain and increase their ability to concentrate on things like homework.

Blueberry Minute Muffin

At Kodiak Cakes, we like our snacks just as much as your Kodiak cubs do, which is why we’ve come out with products like our Kodiak Cakes Blueberry Minute Muffin. After all, we all know nothing can get done when you have a bunch of hangry bears roaming around. Not only are our muffins packed with whole grains, protein, and real blueberries, they also taste delicious and are super easy to make. All you have to do is add water, stir, and microwave for one minute. We wouldn’t be surprised if our muffins become a regular on your grocery list!

Don’t Feel Rushed!

These snacks are some of our favorites because they are great on-the-go options. Even though our Pizza Pinwheels and Banana Chocolate Power Muffins require a little prep ahead of time, you can make them in bulk to enjoy all week! These snacks also offer real nutrition thanks to whole ingredients, making them a great replacement for more highly processed on-the-go snack options.

If you’re in need of a quick snack to feed your kids as you head out the door for soccer practice, piano lessons, or an afternoon playdate, these fast snacks are just what your kids need to avoid an afternoon energy crash.
