Kodiak Cake Original Buttermilk & Honey Flapjack & Waffle Mix

If you woke up today feeling like there’s something special about November 6th, you wouldn’t be wrong. Today is the 24th anniversary of Kodiak Cakes! We have come a long way since our founder, Joel Clark, first started selling his family’s flapjack mixes from a little red wagon when he was just eight years old. To celebrate the occasion, we wanted to give you all a quick rundown of where we’ve been, where we are today, and where we’re headed.

The Early Days

When Kodiak Cakes was founded back in 1994, Joel and his older brother Jon worked hard to sell their original whole grain flapjack and waffle mix to local retailers, small ski town shops, and sporting goods stores. But after a bumpy three years, the company had seen minimal growth and Jon eventually handed the company over to Joel to run on his own. The early years were a struggle for Joel, but he stayed positive and pushed through all of the obstacles put in his way to keep Kodiak Cakes afloat.

In 2009, Joel hired Cameron Smith to fill the role of partner and COO at Kodiak Cakes. Cameron was quick to become the “secret weapon” that Kodiak Cakes needed. It was Cameron’s idea to make a pitch on Shark Tank, which proved to be one of our most profitable investments. While the Shark’s offer was too low for them to accept, our short appearance on Shark Tank was enough to help Kodiak Cakes Buttermilk Power Cakes become the best-selling pancake mix in Target.

Kodiak Cakes Today

We remain a family-owned business to this day, with Joel as our CEO and Cameron as our COO. Our company headquarters is located at the base of Utah’s beautiful Wasatch Range in Park City, where we’re constantly inspired to explore and protect our mountain home. Though we’ve grown, we remain committed to inspiring active living and healthier eating by crafting 100% whole grain, protein-packed, non-GMO foods that taste great. In fact, each of our products rests on these four pillars:

100% Whole Grains: We use 100% whole grains in everything we make because not only do whole grains taste better, but they are also less processed and better for you. They were also the primary ingredient used to make the flapjacks that folks relied on to sustain them with energy for life on the frontier. If it worked for them, why not us too?

Protein Packed: We’ve learned through the years that the combination of whey protein and protein found naturally in whole grain wheat makes our foods a great source of energy and also keeps you fuller for longer.

Non-GMO: We are committed to using non-GMO ingredients due to the impact genetically modified crops can have on the environment and farmers.

Great Taste: It’s important to us that everything we make isn’t just healthy, but it actually tastes great too. We work hard to craft recipes that you and your family will be excited to eat.
