We offer a variety of foods carefully crafted from frontier-inspired recipes at Kodiak Cakes, but our Kodiak Cups have always been a been a favorite of busy moms, training athletes, and people crushing the 9-to-5 grind. If you’re familiar with our Kodiak Cups, you know we craft them with whole grains and protein like all of our products. What makes these tasty cups so convenient is that you only have to add 1/4 cup water or milk (1/3 cup for our oatmeal), pop it in the microwave for one minute (30 seconds for our oatmeal)—and voilà! You’ve got yourself a tasty on-the-go breakfast or snack!
Some of you may already have the steps for making a Kodiak Cup down, but we get a lot of questions about our cups. That’s okay, though, because we’re always here to help! If you’re confused about how to make one of our Kodiak Cups, the first thing we suggest is following the step-by-step directions on the package.
For those of you who still have questions, keep reading because we’re breaking down the process of making a perfect Kodiak Cup with much more detail than the packaging allows for. For an example, we’ll use our Almond Poppy Seed Muffin Cup, but note that these steps pertain to all of our Kodiak Cups EXCEPT our oatmeal (we will talk about the differences between our Kodiak Cups below).
How to make a Kodiak Cup
- Choose a Cup: Select your favorite Kodiak Cup.
- Remove Lid: Take off the lid and pour 1/4 cup water (or milk for extra protein) into your cup.
- Mix it in: If you’d like to add any additional ingredients to the batter of your cup, do it now. We’re adding lemon zest for a hint of lemon taste!
- Stir Completely: Stir the contents of your Kodiak Cup until thoroughly combined. It takes a little extra time, but if you leave any dry ingredients in your cup (usually at the bottom), part of your cup will have a chalky texture.
- Microwave: Microwave your cup on high for 60 seconds. Some people skip this step, thinking you only need to add water or milk and your cup is ready to go. We can’t say it enough; our Kodiak Cups require the use of a microwave. If there are any wet spots left after one minute, microwave for another 10-15 seconds.
- Top it: Add any toppings you’d like to eat with your cup! We recommend fresh fruit or any one of our Super Fruit Syrups, but they also taste great with Greek yogurt or even peanut butter!
- Dig in!
Tips & Tricks
We are here to help you make a perfect Kodiak Cup every time. With that said, there are a few tips and tricks to help you become a pro:
- If your Kodiak Cup is too dry, try adding a little more liquid the next time you make one. If it is too moist, try reducing the amount of liquid before mixing the batter. We suggest keeping the consistency of your cup’s batter more sticky than runny to help it rise while cooking in the microwave.
- The elevation of your location affects your Kodiak Cups. We test our products at about 7000’ in Park City, UT. But if you are cooking at higher elevations, we suggest making sure to use cold water or milk when making your Kodiak Cup because the boiling point of water lowers by ~1° F with every 500’ of elevation gained from sea level. To compensate for this, cooking time must increase, which is why we note on our packaging directions that if you see any dime-sized wet spots in your Kodiak Cup after 60 seconds, put your cup back in the microwave and cook for another 10-15 seconds.
- “Can I cook the batter on a skillet?” Yes, absolutely! This is a great option when a microwave is not available—like when you’re camping for example. Mix the contents as directed and pour onto a hot griddle to cook just like any other pancake.
- “Can I use your flapjack & waffle mix in a mug instead?” Most definitely! Combine approximately 1/4 cup dry mix and 1/4 cup liquid in a microwave safe mug, but pay attention to the batter’s consistency and adjust the liquid amount as needed. Cook as directed above. Please note: mug cakes with our flapjack & waffle mix will not rise as much as our Kodiak Cups, but they still taste delicious!
- “Why doesn’t my Kodiak Cup look like the picture on your website?” This could be due to a number of things. It could be because of the liquid amount you used to cook your cup. It could be because of the type of liquid you used to cook your cup (water, milk, nut milk, etc.). It could also be because of your location’s elevation. In any case, all that matters are that your Kodiak Cup tastes good, right?
Our oatmeal cups can be made one of two ways: in a microwave or by steeping your cup in hot water. These Kodiak Cups call for slightly more liquid (1/3 cup) than our flapjack, muffin, brownie, and cornbread cups. Depending on which way you choose to cook your oatmeal cup, there are a few things to keep in mind.
If you are going to use a microwave, make sure to use cold water or milk as a base, stir well, and microwave for only 30 seconds first. If your oatmeal is still too runny, microwave again in 10 second increments until your oatmeal reaches a desired consistency. When oatmeal is microwaved for too long, especially when hot water is used as a base, the oats will rise up, overflow, and make a mess of your microwave. You may know what we’re talking about, but if you haven’t already experienced this dreadful oatmeal explosion, trust us when we say you want to avoid it at all costs.
If you choose to steep your oatmeal, make sure that the 1/3 cup water or milk is hot when added to the cup. This will help the oats cook. Pro tip: we suggest holding the lid down over your cup for at least two minutes to keep the heat inside while the oats cook.
