Fight Back With Flapjacks This Allergy Season

Allergy season is here (dun dun dun), and if two words have us itching for relief, they’re hay fever. For all of you readers suffering from “sneezonal” allergies, we’re serving up three allergy-fighting pancake recipes to help you battle the blooming trees, grass, flower buds, and weeds that are causing your head to ache this allergy season.

Plus, these stacks are also packed with protein and 100% whole grains to help you tackle more than just your allergies this season. When you fuel up with the good stuff, there’s no cap on the epic days ahead even if you have to bring the adventure inside — your allergies deserve a break, right?

Golden Milk Pancakes

Curious about the hype around golden milk and turmeric tea? Beyond its vibrant color, Turmeric spice packs a punch with its anti-inflammatory compound, curcumin, which inhibits histamine release, reduces allergic responses, and fights oxidative stress (Better Nutrition Magazine).

Sneaking turmeric into your diet with recipes like our Golden Milk Pancakes can help support your immune response during allergy season. Help increase Turmeric absorption in your body by whisking ¼ teaspoon of black pepper into your coconut milk base. And if you’re feeling wild, sprinkle a pinch of pepper on your pancakes for an added kick.

Probiotic Pancakes

Gut check: Probiotics could help your seasonal allergies. Probiotics are live bacteria or microbes that help restore or balance the number of good gut bacteria and improve digestive health. Now you may be wondering what this has to do with seasonal allergies. Well, some research demonstrates how taking probiotics can help provide temporary relief for symptoms caused by seasonal allergies. We can’t promise that probiotics will eliminate the allergy sniffles, but they can help decrease nasal congestion and elevate that airflow.

Our Probiotic Pancakes recipe cleverly incorporates Greek Yogurt into your stack, packing each bite with gut-friendly bacteria. And to help you make the most of your probiotic intake, it also calls for one tablespoon of chia seeds to better support the healthy growth of good bacteria (like probiotics) in your stomach. Plus, with 16g of protein per serving, you’ll be fueled for whatever the day throws at you (including pollen).

Local Honey Pancakes

Our Local Honey Pancakes recipe is a breeze to whip up, just mix Kodiak Buttermilk Power Cakes with water and start cooking! The allergy-fighting ingredients we use for this stack all go on top — local honey and bee pollen. Contrary to popular belief, there is actually no correlation between the reduction of allergy symptoms and consuming honey. However, honey is known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant capacities that can help soothe things like a sore throat or relieve inflammation that you may experience because of allergies.

Additionally, bee pollen can help boost the immune system and reduce the severity of allergy symptoms your body experiences during allergy season. Lucky for us, honey and bee pollen are both tasty additions to pancakes. While this recipe suggests these ingredients as toppings, we love mixing them right into our pancake batter, too!

These allergy-fighting foods offer numerous additional benefits beyond just allergy relief. Whether you suffer from allergies or not, adding turmeric, probiotics, and honey can be beneficial for your overall diet.
