FIGHT BACK WITH FLAPJACKS THIS ALLERGY SEASON

Allergy season is under way, and if there are two words that have us itching for relief, they’re hay fever. For all of you readers suffering from “sneezonal” allergies, we’re serving up three allergy fighting pancake recipes to help you combat the blooming trees, grass, flower buds, and weeds that are causing your head to ache this allergy season.

GOLDEN MILK PANCAKES

Have you wondered why things like golden milk and turmeric tea have become so popular? It’s because Turmeric spice contains an anti-inflammatory substance called curcumin. Curcumin has a lot more to offer than just giving turmeric its bright golden yellow color. According to the experts at Better Nutrition Magazine, Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory compound “that inhibits the release of histamine, inhibits allergic response, and decreases oxidative stress.” Sneaking turmeric into your diet with recipes like our Golden Milk Pancakes can help support your immune response during allergy season. And don’t forget to include a ¼ teaspoon of pepper to your coconut milk base when mixing your pancake batter because combining turmeric spice with pepper and fats – like coconut milk – will help increase its absorption in your body. If you dare, we even challenge you to sprinkle just a little bit of pepper on top of your pancakes before eating them!

PROBIOTIC PANCAKES

Probiotics are live bacteria or microbes that help restore or balance the number of good gut bacteria and improve digestive health. You may be wondering what this has to do with seasonal allergies. Well, there has been some research done that demonstrates how taking probiotics can help provide temporary relief for symptoms caused by seasonal allergies. We can’t promise that probiotics will eliminate the allergy sniffles, but they can help decrease nasal congestion to help you breathe a bit easier. Our recipe for Probiotic Pancakes is one of many creative ways to fit more probiotics into your diet. We snuck Greek Yogurt into the base of these pancakes to boost the concentration of probiotics in each bite. And to help you make the most of your probiotic intake, this recipe calls for one tablespoon of chia seeds to foster the healthy growth of good bacteria (like probiotics) in your stomach.

LOCAL HONEY PANCAKES

Of all of these recipes, our recipe for Local Honey Pancakes is the easiest to make. All you have to do for the actual pancakes is fire up the griddle, add one cup water to one cup Kodiak Cakes Buttermilk Power Cakes, and start cooking! The allergy fighting ingredients in this batch of pancakes actually go on top—local honey and bee pollen. Contrary to popular belief, there is actually no correlation between the reduction of allergy symptoms and consuming honey. However, honey is known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant capacities that can help soothe things like a sore throat or relieve inflammation that you may experience because of allergies. Additionally, bee pollen can help boost the immune system and reduce the severity of allergy symptoms your body experiences during allergy season. Lucky for us, honey and bee pollen are both tasty additions to pancakes. While this recipe calls for these ingredients as toppings, we suggest mixing them right into your pancake batter, too!

The best thing about each of these allergy fighting foods is that they have a number of other health benefits that extend far beyond allergy relief. So, whether or not you suffer from allergies, turmeric, probiotics, and honey are great additions to your diet that can help improve your overall health.
