Fall is officially here, which means the leaves are changing and the temperatures are perfect for fun outdoor adventures. Chances are the corn maze and pumpkin patch are already on your list of must-dos this fall, but with pick-your-own farms becoming more popular, you’ll want to set a weekend aside to visit your local apple orchard while the apple harvest is in full swing.

Fall in an apple orchard is something you and your family will want to experience every year—the smell of apples permeates the air as the branches bend from the weight of dozens of ripe apples. With so much low-hanging fruit, it’s the perfect place to take your little ones to learn and experience how one of their favorite fruits are harvested. A trip to the apple orchard is a long-standing fall tradition for many families, but if you’re a first-timer looking for a great way to enjoy apple-picking season, here’s a few tips to get you started.


There’s no question that taking time to pick your way through an apple orchard is a relaxing way to spend your day, but it also means you’ll be spending most of the day on your feet, walking between trees, and lifting however many bushels of apples you decide to pick. With that said, we suggest wearing a comfortable, supportive pair of shoes to avoid achy legs and feet. You’ll also want to pack other outdoor essentials such as: sunscreen, a jacket, and a good hatto keep the sun off your gourd and glare out of your eyes—you wouldn’t want to miss that prize apple because you couldn’t see it! It also doesn’t hurt to bring a comfortable pair of gloves if you’re planning to pick a few boxes.



One of the best parts of picking apples is the fun things you can make with a bushel or two. Of course, it’s tough to beat a crisp apple straight from the tree, but a warm apple pie made with freshly picked apples is a close second. A bowl of homemade soup is the perfect way to end a fall day spent picking apples. Knowing when and where to pick apples will vary based on where you live. The good news is that nearly every state has an orchard or two—you’ll just have to do some research to find out which orchards allow you to pick your own apples and when they’re ripe. Apples in Utah are typically harvested in September and run throughout the month of October, making it a perfect fall activity. This year, some of our Kodiak Cakes staff took a visit to one of our favorite local orchards, Rowley’s Red Barn and Mountainland Apples. They were kind enough to let us experience the Golden Delicious apple harvest on their farm. Their small, family-owned farm operates in Santaquin, UT, and they offer all sorts of fun fall family activities!
