HOLIDAY HEALTH TIP: HYDRATION

2 min read

There are many reasons to eat, drink, and be merry during the holidays; but, are you getting enough water? Adequate hydration is important for numerous body functions like blood pressure, body temperature, and proper digestion. Some side effects of dehydration can include dizziness, headaches, and difficulty processing information. That’s not how you want to celebrate the season, right?

How much water do you need? The answer is subjective based on physical activity, age, and certain medical conditions and/or medications. If you are vacationing to a different climate for the holidays, particularly somewhere with extremely warm temperatures or at higher altitudes, your fluid needs may also increase. If you’re looking for a good starting point, however, consume half of your body weight in fluid ounces. For example, a 150 lb. woman should try to consume 75 fluid ounces of water daily.

Water isn’t the only way to hydrate, though. Fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, strawberries, celery, and cucumbers are more than 90 percent water by weight. Additionally, dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cottage cheese – which all go great with Kodiak Cakes – also count towards your daily fluid intake.

When it comes to fueling our bodies, we are all mindful of our food intake, but don’t neglect hydration!

Thanksgiving Turkey Waffles

Ingredients

  • 2 Frozen Kodiak Cakes Power Waffles - any flavor
  • 6 wooden skewers (6”)
  • Strawberries, halved
  • Cantaloupe - one piece cut into a triangular shape, the rest cut with a melon baller
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Pineapple, cubed

Directions

  1. Toast two Kodiak Cakes Power Waffles.
  2. Set one waffle aside. Cut a smaller circle out of the second waffle.
  3. Place the small waffle on top of the large one. It will serve as the turkey’s head.
  4. Use blueberries to give the turkey eyes, and the triangle-shaped cantaloupe piece for the turkey’s beak.
  5. Thread the remaining fruit on the six wooden skewers in any pattern desired.
  6. Once the fruit skewers are assembled, place them in a fan shape behind the large waffle to serve as the turkey’s feathers.
  7. Dig in!

Dietitian Tip: Consider pairing with cottage cheese or a yogurt-based dip!
