There’s no better way to embrace being Homemade for the Holidays than a traditional sugar cookie, decorated with just the right amount of festive frosting. Last Saturday, we teamed up with the queen of all things cookie, @the_hutch_oven , to bring you the best of the best when it comes to baking and decorating tips. Her sugar cookie recipe is certainly at the top of Santa’s list, but is also perfect for satisfying any hungry bears that comes roaming into your kitchen this holiday season. If you missed us live on Instagram, don’t worry, today we’re sharing both her recipe and the cookie decorating class on our blog – so check it out!

  1. Cream butter, salt, and sugar for two minutes on medium speed.
  2. Add in vanilla and egg and mix until combined.
  3. Add in Kodiak Cakes mix and combine completely.
  4. Turn dough out onto a sheet of plastic wrap and refrigerate for three hours or overnight. Very important to refrigerate your dough or it will spread a lot.
  5. Preheat oven to 375 degrees, and roll out cookie dough to at least 1/4 inch thick or thicker.
  6. Place on a cookie sheet two inches apart and bake for 8-10 minutes.
  7. Pull out of oven and use butter knife to gently push back any sides of the cookies that may have spread. Let cool for two minutes and transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  8. Decorate with buttercream frosting (see recipe below).

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening, softened
  • 1/4 teaspoon, plus a pinch of salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 9 cups confectioners sugar, sifted
  • 5 to 6 tablespoons
  • 2% reduced-fat milk

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter, shortening and salt at medium speed until well combined, about 2 minutes.
  2. Add vanilla, and beat at medium speed for 1 more minute.
  3. Add confectioners sugar, and place a kitchen towel over mixer (the bowl of stand mixer will be full). Beat at at low speed and gradually increase speed to medium until thick and combined (be careful not to over-mix).
  4. Add 5 tablespoons milk or cream and beat at medium-high speed until smooth, about 1 minute. If needed, add the remaining 1 tablespoon milk or cream, 1 teaspoon at a time.
  5. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
